AVHS CTSO's
Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSO's)
FFA is a co-curricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education. FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners, and more. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of agricultural career pathways. So today, we are still the Future Farmers of America. But, we are the Future Biologists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers, and Future Entrepreneurs of America, too.
AVHS attends FFA Nationals, October 2024
Apple Valley High School (AVHS) is proud to announce that five students from its Animal Science Pathway, all serving as FFA officers, attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, from October 22-26, 2024. This marked an exciting milestone for the AVHS FFA program, which will be represented on the national stage for the first time in several years.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of AVHS FFA alumni Lawson Secord, class of 2024, who is one of only four students in the nation that competed for the prestigious Proficiency Award in Sheep Production. This highly competitive award recognizes excellence in sheep production and management, and Lawson’s achievement has been years in the making. After winning first place at the California State FFA Convention in April, Lawson competed at the national level, placing top four in the nation.
Lawson, who is currently attending Fresno State and majoring in Animal Science with a specialization in Pre-Veterinary studies, began his sheep production project well before high school. His dedication and hard work over the years have culminated in this incredible opportunity to compete for top honors on a national stage. Joining him will be Jennifer Pierson, AVHS’s agriculture teacher, who has been instrumental in guiding the FFA program in her second year at the school. Her leadership and mentorship have been pivotal to the success of both Lawson and the Animal Science Pathway students.
Additionally, retired agriculture teacher Duane Penfold, who taught at AVHS for 40 years and was Lawson’s 9th-grade teacher, will also attend the event to support the AVHS team. Duane’s long-standing contributions to agricultural education have left a lasting impact on the school and the broader community.
"We are incredibly proud to have our students and alumni representing Apple Valley High School at such a prestigious event," said Gretchen Peratt, CTE Coordinator at AVHS. "Lawson’s accomplishments, being one of four in the nation, and the hard work of our FFA student officer team, reflect the strength of our Animal Science Pathway and the dedication of our staff and students."
Apple Valley High School offers 15 different Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, including Animal Science, which prepares students with industry-specific skills and knowledge before graduation. AVHS’s commitment to providing students with hands-on, real-world experiences continues to foster success both in and out of the classroom.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel in their Career Technical Pathway.
